Following up his 2018 record Wait For Love, Cam Maclean has returned with a second solo LP, Secret Verses. The album is produced by 2021 Polaris Music Prize-winner Rollie Pemberton (Cadence Weapon), with additional production by Alex Crow. Initial recordings were begun at Crow studios in Montreal, with Alex Crow engineering; with most recordings later completed at Dream House studios in Toronto, with Calvin Hartwick engineering and Pemberton producing. The record further develops Maclean’s personal, pop-inflected songwriting, along with greater musical exploration and nods to musical styles such as 70s folk, 80s New Wave, Yacht Rock, and even contemporary Classical music. The album is grounded in Pemberton’s thoughtful production, as well as in Maclean’s unique guitar playing, multi-instrumental performances, and intimate vocals.
